If you read yourself as a fiction instead of a fact, you have much more control over how things are. The facts are always partial, misleading, especially the facts about ourselves. If we are a story we are telling, we can change the story. Freud, one of the grand masters of narrative, understood that even what has happened can change if we learn how to retell it.
